Teaching and Assessing Writing in the EFL classroom
Types of writing tasks
The types of writing tasks that are appropriate as far as level B1/B2 is concerned are brainstorming / speedwriting to generate ideas in terms of content/process and generating word lists for writing. First of all, brainstorming motivates learners due to the fact that improves cooperation and creative thinking by generating or maximizing ideas. Moreover, brainstorming “echoes” the notion of equal participation since it gives learners τhe opportunity to express their views in order to construct the framework of their writing skills. More specifically it helps students to classify and consolidate the use of adjectives about the topic.
Furthermore, generating word lists for writing is a source of creativity which motivates students to be productive by organizing and comparing new ideas. It has as a result the reinforcement of students’ memory and comprehension about topics and language. Therefore, it is an extremely useful tool that ameliorates students’ cognitive ability because it enables them to elaborate and generate ideas promptly. Consequently, these types of writing tasks embody Hyland’s categories.
